Empowering Youth: Bridging Mental Health and Economic Stability in Kenya

HEDSO is dedicated to addressing the pressing mental health needs of young people in Kenya, with a particular focus on rural and underserved areas. Youth mental health in Kenya is a growing concern, especially in regions like HomaBay, Kisumu, and Nyamira counties, where socio-economic challenges, limited access to healthcare, and cultural stigmas significantly impact the mental well-being of young people. Our interventions are based on community requests and needs, ensuring that our efforts are relevant and effective. By implementing targeted programs and providing necessary resources, we strive to make mental health care more accessible to youths in these underserved regions.

Mental Health OverView
Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It's about how you drive, not where you're going. Young people must remember that seeking help and taking care of their mental well-being is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Our Approach
1. Targeted Sensitization Programs

Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Institutions:

Conduct workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions focused on mental health awareness. These sessions cover topics such as recognizing signs of mental health issues, stress management, and the importance of seeking help. They are designed to engage students at different educational levels and provide age-appropriate information and strategies.

Out-of-School Youths:

Implement community outreach programs during our Ending Triple Threats youth engagement to educate out-of-school youths on mental health issues, aiming to reduce stigma and encourage a supportive environment.

2. Establishment of Mental Health Clubs

We Form mental health clubs that serve as safe spaces for students to discuss mental health issues, share experiences, and support one another. Each club consists of 15-20 members and conducts regular meetings, awareness campaigns, and mental health activities. These clubs also act as a peer support network within the school.

3. Peer Counselling Training

We Identify and train students within mental health clubs to become peer counsellors. These trained peer counsellors are equipped with the skills to offer initial support and psychosocial aid to their peers who show signs of mental health risks. They also facilitate referrals to school guidance and counselling departments for further professional assistance when necessary.

4. Teacher Sensitization

Conduct comprehensive sensitization sessions for teachers to enhance their understanding of mental health issues. These sessions focus on identifying early signs of mental health problems in students, effective intervention strategies, and creating a supportive classroom environment.

5. Strengthening Guidance and Counselling Departments

Revitalize and strengthen school guidance and counselling departments by providing them with necessary resources, training, and support. This includes updating their knowledge on current mental health issues and effective counselling techniques.

6. Wellness Sessions

We conduct wellness sessions that bring together youths from various areas. These sessions focus on holistic well-being, including physical health, mental health, and social connections. Activities may include yoga, mindfulness exercises, and group discussions on mental health topics.

7. Identification and Support of At-Risk Individuals

During community outreaches, identify individuals at risk of mental health issues. Provide immediate psychosocial aid and support to those identified, and facilitate connections to further professional help if needed.
